“Boulevard du village noir”. Podcast in French. My name is Shyaka, I’m 39, I live in Geneva and I’m black. After being attacked by a stranger who called me a monkey in a bar on my boulevard, I filed a complaint but, to my great surprise, the courts condemned the individual without recognizing the racist nature of the attack.
I then learned that a little over a century ago, in my neighborhood, just a few meters from the scene of the attack, the Swiss population came to observe blacks exhibited in what was known as a negro village.
Alongside my legal battle to have the racist nature of my attack recognized, I decided to explore the history of the black presence in Switzerland, and the way in which the racist imaginaries that persist in our country were constructed and propagated.
A little story within a big story, revealing a little-known chapter of Swiss history.
